E-mail Virus Spam

Thursday 4 September 2008 11:57 AM
A number of IT Services clients have been recieving e-mails that although contain no dangerous code, link to websites which contain infected activeX plugins.

Users are tricked into installing an ActiveX which contrains several different versions of AntiVirus, typically named XP Antivirus 2008 or some variant. This is a nasty infection which on the face of it acts to be a Malware scanner claiming your PC is infected with numerous notifications.

This program is fraudware in that makes changes on your computer and then states these changes are infections as a scare tactic to have you purchase the software and contribute to the fraud leaving the infection still installed. This years Variant of XP Antivirus is more violent, more resilient, more immune to removal attempts, more "intelligent"; now it's recovering itself after being removed despite use of corporate AV, anti spyware solutions.

IT Services strongly recommend that you keep all client desktop AV solutions up to date and that all users are educated that they can recognise such a mail risk.
